EDUCATIOANL INSTITUTE.
The monthly meeting of the Cliitha branch of the Educational Institute of Ofcago was held in Balclutha schooihouse, on Saturday last. The members -present were : : Mr G rigor (President), Messrs M'Ewan, Porteous, Moore, M'Kay, and M'-iSTuirJ; Mr Malcolm, rector of the Tokomairiro Grammar School, was the only Representative of the Milton branch.
The President stated that ho had not thought it necessary to call a special meeting for the consideration of the Education Bill, as there had been a general meeting of the institute for that purpose, to which meeting every member had been invited. Members were glad to learn that the Bill met with general approval in the House, and was making some progress there. A discussion took place on several clauses of the Act — especially 'those relating to religion, the powers of school committees, and the distribution of the grant for average attendance-. It was agreed 'to hold the ne&t meeting at Milton, on the first Saturday of October-. _____
