RIVER BANK PROTECTION.

A meeting of the River Bank Protection Committee was held in the Newmarket Hotel on Wednesday evening -; Mr Peter Mason in the chair. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman reported that very little had been done by the sub-Coimnittee, appointed at last meeting, to canvass the •township for subscriptions. The reason was they had learned that Mr Duncan, C.E., was to be engaged making a survey of the river on behalf of the Board of Conservators, and the Committee considered it would be better to have a report by hill! as to what was necessary for the protection of the banks before seeking subscriptions. Accordingly he (the Chairman) had asked Mr Duncan to furnish a report and plan. This he had done. The report was then read, from which it appeared the total works necessary was estimated to cost L 2350, but could be commenced and carried out according to the funds in hand of the Committee. We shall publish the report in next issue. A long discussion ensued upon the subject. Ultimately Mr B. Grigor moved that the Town Council be requested to put in a trial groin tit the point behind Mr Hislop's house, Mr Tosh seconded the motion, which was carried. It was considered this work could be done at little expense, and by shewing the efficacy of the works proposed the public would subscribe to have them carried out. The Chairman suggested that a canvass should also be made amongst the inhabitants, with a view to getting the neccessary funds to commence protective works. If LICOO was raised in this way he had no doubt something permanent anight be accomplished. The suggestion was agreed to, and the following gentlemen were appointed a Committee for the purpose ■: Messrs Hogg, Mason, and Paterson.

It was agreed that the Committee should report at a meeting to bo held at the same place that night fortnight. The meeting then adjourned.
