COURSE OF INSTRUCTTON IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

The following are the provisions of clause 85 of the new Education Bill, determining the course of instruction in public schools : — "* Every public school shall be conducted in accordance with the following regulations (a copy of which regulations shall be conspicuously put up m every such school), namely : — " 1. The subjects of instruction shall be as follows: — Reading, writing, arifcli* metic, English grammar and composition, geography, history, elementary mechanics, including drawing, object lessons, vocal music, and (in the case of girls) sewing and needlework. But no child shall be compelled to be present at the teaching of history whose parents or guardians object thereto. (i 2. Tho scliool shall bo kept live days in each week for at least foitf hours, two of which in tho forenoon and two in the afternoon shall be consecutive. " 3. The school shall be opened every morning with the read in ir of the Loi'd's Prayer aud a portion oi* the Holy Scriptures. With this exception, the teaching shall be of an entirely secular character ; and no child shall attend at the reading herein provided for if I ]lS or her parents or guardians inform the , committee or the teacher in writing that they object to such atteaance, "4. the 'school buildings may he used on days and at hours other than tbose used for secular instruction upon su*;h terms as the committee may from time to time prescribe, subject to the approval of the Board, "5. The class-books used in the school shall be such only as shall be approved by the Governor in Council. " 6. Tho school shall be open at all times to (he visit of an inspector. " 7. No fees shall be payable at an/ public school except as "hereinbefore provided in the case of district high schools."
