KAITANGATA RAILWAY.
'i'O THE EDITOR.
Sir,— l have jus b learned that it is the intention of the Kaitangata Railway Co. to very' largely increase the charge for carriage of grain and goods between Kaitanga.ta and Sth-ling. The present charge is, in all conscience, high enough, and the proposed increase is not made on the plea that the company are losers, but simply because grain, &c., does not pay them so well as coal, and they wish to monopolise as far as possible all waggons for this mineral. Would it not be possible to get Government to take over the line, and as they would be- able to work it easily in connection with their main line,, the public could not be otherwise than great gainers by the transfer.; and that it would pay Government equally as well, if not better, than any of their main lines there cannot be the least doubt. I think it would be well to have this matter agitated, with a view to gettiug the line out of the hands of the present selfish proprietors. — lam, &.c, . - ' Settler.
