BALCLUTHA TOWN COUNCIL.

c The ordinary meeting of the Town Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. There were present : His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Dunne, Hogg, Hope, Tosh, and Cramond. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Mayor reported that as previously arranged, a deputation from the Council had waited upon the Hon. G. M'Lean on Saturday last with reference to the bridge at Balciutha. The deputation nad pointed ■ out that the bridge required immediate at- ' tention, as repairs and painting -were necessary ; also, that it required constant cleaning. Mr M'Lean replied that as the bridge lay within the Municipality, it fell to be taken charge of by the Town Council. The Government would therefore hand it over to them, and also the amount that had been collected at the toll since Ist January, the date when the money was commenced to be paid to the General Government. The Mayor also reported that the Council had met with the committee of citizens with reference to the protection of the river; they had examined the banks, and consulted upon the subject. The result Avas that the Committee were to canvass ih.e township to see how much money could be raised by subscriptions to assist in- any works that might be undertaken. The reports were adopted. Councillor Dunne moved that the Works Committee examine and report at next ; meeting as to the repairs required by the bridge. In doing so he said he believed the bridge only required painting and some of the bolts screwed up to render it serviceable for many years. He was informed that Mr Smaill had reported to the Government that with slight repairs the bridge would be equal to the traffic for thirty years to come. Councillor Hogg seconded the motion, which was carried. The Mayor referred to the new culvert at the southern boundary of the town, and explained that he had seen Mr M'Neil on the subject. That gentleman informed him that if the Council should place the culvert out of its present site, he would not cut a channel opposite it through his property. He (the Mayor) therefore suggested that it might be advisable to erect the new culvert at the same spot as the old one. The matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee. Councillor Tosh called attention to the necessity for a box culvert at the bottom 'of Barr-street. The work had been passed months ago, but had not yet been attended to. Referred to the Works Committee. In reply to a question, the Clerk reported that he had summoned A. C. Campbell "for payment of his rates, and had • obtained a judgment. He had also ob- " tamed judgment against, others, while a good many had paid the amount into ■• Court upon receiving summonses. Councillor Hogg moved that the solicitor bo requested to lay his account before next meeting of Council. Agreed to. Councillor Hogg gave notice that at next meeting h.3 would move : That this ! Council at next ordinary meeting take in+o consideration the advisability of adopting the Municipal Act of 1876, or I any part or parts thereof. Councillor Cramond gave notice that at next meeting he would move : That the Council take into consideration the advisa-. bility of employing an engineer to survey the river banks with a view to protect the "township from flooding. In reply to a question, the Mayor said he believed the municipality was exactly in the same position as ooher municipalities as regards the matter of the bye-laws, • and he believed nothing could be done until they adopted the Act of last session ■- of Assembly. The meeting then adjourned.
