. *. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I saw in your last week's issue a* letter signed A. C. Saunders, referring to a lecture delivered in tho Schoolhouse by Mr Byers, which lecture Master Saunders states was delivered (I use his own words) subject to the sanction of the School Committee. Now, Sir, I write in the interests of truth. The Committee most emphatically deny that they were ever asked to sanction, or that they ever gave their sanction to the " socalled lecture," or that they knew that a lecture had been given until apprised of it by your columns. I may mention that in the opinion of many whose opinions we are bound to value, the " socalled lecture " was highly instructive and well suited to the time and place, as the arguments tended to felucidate the wonderful operations of. God in the work of nature. — I am, &c, Joseph Sandlant, Secretary to School Committee, Catlins, February 5, 1877. _ [Note. — We have omitted a considerable portion of Mr Sandlant's letter as too personal and invective for ourcolumns. — Ed. C. L.J *>
