Tokomairiro Grammar School.
At the annual statutory meeting of householders on Monday evening, Mr' H. Clark was called to the chair. The Secretary to the School Committee read the following report ':— To the electors of the Educational district of
Tokoinairiro.
GEKTLEUEN*,— The financial year, 1876, having • expired, your Committee submit for the approval -of the annual meeting, a balancs-sheet of receipts and expenditure, from which ifc will-he seen that "'the fees received du-iing the past year amount to £340 Os 6d, showing an increase of £1.8 upon the "■previous year. The Committee are glad to be 7 able to report that a considerable amount of the -arrears due at the close of 1875 were paid in the " early part of the year. . The Committee instructed ' the Head Master to decline receiving back scholars in cases where more than two previous quarters' fees were in arrear. This had an immediate • and beneficial effect in securing payment of - arrears. ' •
At the commencement of tbe year, your Com--mittee appointed Mr Philip Bremner, on probation, as second assistant master in lieu of Mr Millar. He has discharged the duties for a full .year very satisfactorily, and has resigned to enter the Noimal School to complete his studies, and to become a trained teacher.. In his place the 'Committee have appointed Mr H. A. Wild, who has been under training at the Normal School for sometime. He is spoken of very favourably, snd the Committee have great hopes that he will prove an acquisition to the School.
At ."the commencement of the year Robert Black desired- to be relieved of his duties of pupil 'teacher*, and Jonathan Golding was appointed in his place: The Head Master was also authorised to employ Miss Jessie Brown provisionally as pupil teacher. She has now become qualified for advancement, and is now eligible and will succeed Miss, M'Laren, who is about leaving to receive further training at the Normal Sohool.
In September last your Committee made application to the -Education Board for a irrant of money to enlarge the infant class-room, to paint "the whole of the school buildings, and to effect * other very n.ecessary repnirs. - . The extended class-room is now on the eve of 'completion, and will prove of incalculable convenience to the teacher of the juvenile depart-ment.-Ventilation: and drainage have also been attended to. The Bo*->rd liberally granted £225. 'The Committee, are. laying out the money in 'effecting the most urgent repairs, and they trust the funds available will, be sufficient to put' the •"school in thorough so od order.
During the building of the extended classroom the infant classes were taught in the Volunteer Hall, granted free of rent, for which the Committee desire to tender to the Bruce Rifles their best thanks. ... ,.
Your Committee gave prizes this year as heretofore/not exceeding £10 in value. Several ladies and gentlemen gave . special * prizes, to whom the Committee; accord their thanks. The Inspector of Schools, My Petrie, held liis annual examination of .the School in the 'early pai-fc bf November. ; The report shows the marked' pr-o'--gressfand advancement achieved during the past .year,- which is highly gratifying to, the Commit- . tee, andr reflects the greatest credit upon, the' teachers.^ The Committee haye pleasure in* sstart r ing that the discipline and systematic method of teaching now adopted have secured the full ap•probation of parents.
