MTAU ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Matau Road Board was held in Mr P. Smith's house on Monday afternoon. There were present : Messrs Inglis, Smith, Smaill, and M'Donald.

Mr Inglis was appointed chairman, Mr P. Smith treasurer, and Mr Robert M'Kenzie clerk to the Board, for the ensuing year.

It was resolved that the meetings of the Board be held as hitherto at 2 p.m. on the last Monday ot every month, at the house of Mr Peter Smith.

The following Committees were appointed : — Kaitangata Punt. — Messrs Smaill, Macdonald, and Bell.

Inch Olutha Punt. — The Chairman, and Messrs Smith and Macdonald.

The Chairman was authorised to call for tenders for the erection of a culvert across the district road at Stirling Hotel.

The Chairman submitted a plan for the protection of the river bank at Mr Anderson's property, below the boathouse, Inch Clutha. This was to throw out a breakwater to check the current of the river towards the bank. He »ien tioned that Mr Anderson had pre-

viously offered to bear half the expense of the work.

A long discussion ensued as to the probable effects of the proposed work, and also as to the kind of material that should be employed, and whether it should be carried out by contract or dav labour.

It was ultimately agreed that tenders should be called for the work, the same to be received by Monday evening, and the matter was left in the hands of the Chairman and Mr Smith to have the same carried out.

Mi Smith moved that the culvert across the Kaitangata road, below* Stirling, and also the ditches at the road side, be cleaned out, the same having got choked up. Seconded by Mr Smaill, and carrried, —Mr Smith to see to the work beingdone.

Mr Smith called attention to a dangerous hole in the road on the river bank, opposite Mr Mosley's property, where the bank had been washed a waytill there was not room for a dray to pass.

It was resolved that the hole be filled vp — Mr Smaill to attend to it.

Some repairs were also ordered to be executed upon the river bank road above Kaitangata punt ; on the Inch Clntha side.

It was resolved, that the river being now low, as much gravel as possible should be secured for the road near the English Church, Inch Clutha, and also the road between Messrs Wright and Smnili's. Messrs Macdonald and Smaill were appointed to employ men and drays for the work.

Mr Smaill reported that the metal had not yet been hud upon the road through Kaitangata, the road being in too soft a state to receive it.

The Chairman asked when the Board intend to strike the next rate. In his opinion it was always too late in the season before the works of the Board were undertaken and carried out. He thought an effort should be made to have as many as possible of the works carried out before the harvest.

Mr Smith moved that the rates be struck at next meeting of the Board. Seconded by Mr Smaill, and carried.

Attention was called to the river bank being rapidly worked away opposite Stirling, above the site of the proposed new Church for Inch Clutha. It was agreed that scrub or straw should be placed on the face of the bank, and secured by piles and wire.

The Clerk was instructed to write to the Secretary of Works, urging that the vote for the road from Stirling to the railway terminus should be expended without delay. He was also directed to write to Messrs Wright, Smaill, and Darling, requesting them to remove the whins from off the road lines opposite their properties.

The following accounts were passed for payment : — Mr Finmore (correction of map), £1 2s ; M'Lean, Byres, and Co^£7 4s; M'Kinlay, £29 2s; Gavin Dickson, 10s; Daymen's wages for work on Stirling road, £69 lis; Mr Gillespie, £7 7s.

The meeting then adjourned.
