Christmas Season.

4> . THE HOLIDAY SPORTS. Christmas, with its many happy memories and hopeful anticipations, is once more at our doors. The holiday season will fairly begin to-morrow, and during the next eight or ten days, friendly reunions and kindly congratulations will take precedence amongst the varied phases and mixed adventures, which make up the sum total of our daily intercourse. Were it possible to be otherwise oblivious of the fact, the holiday announcements which appears in our advertising columns, would of themselves be Sufficient to remind us of the occurrence. These announcements show that there is not likely to be any lack of amusements, agreeable to the tastes of the people, and suitable for the season of the year. We have first in order a pic-nic advertised under the auspices of our temperance friends, the representatives of the 1.0. G.T. This body, which we are pleased to learn, is making satisfactory progress in the Clutha district, has, it appears, secured a paddock at Inch Cluth on the grounds belonging to Mr Thomas M'Donald, where they propose enjoying themselves for the day. Two paragraphs in the advertisement furnishes an inkling as to the mode of enjoyment contemplated. These are the brief announcements that the " band will be in attendance," and that ".athletic sports in connection with the gathering will take place punctually at 11 a.m." Inch Clutha has with much truth been described as the " Garden of Otago," and no one acquainted with the province can doubt the appropriateness of the term. Rich in agricultural resource, it is doubly rich in all the grander features of rural felicity. A spot better adapted for open-air recreation and out-door amusement could not be desired. A boat race on Tuakitoto Lake, under the management of. the Clutha Regatta Committee, is another event claiming public attention, set down on the cards for to-morrow. To the lovers of aquatic sports, this will afford a first-class opportunity for a day's good healthy recreation. Patrons of the. turf have in store for their special gratification, the race meeting, fixed for New Year's day, which, together with a well selected programme of athletic sports, will no doubt attract a large share of attention. At Barr's Hall on the evening of that day, an amateur concert, in aid of the building fund of the Church of England, .will take place, at which good talent and a fair programme will be presented. ■ ' Qur : \ Clinton friends also

advertise Caledonian sports for the New Year's Day, at which money prizes to the tune of £50 will be distributed. These are, we believe, amongst the principal events brought under public notice. With an continuation of fine weatW, they should be sufficient to make the season cheerful, or in other words, render it a Merry Christmas, with the immediate prospect of a Happy New Year !
