A total of 1441 Smiths. 643 Browns, 503 Jories and 332 Robinsons are listed in the latest issue of Stone's Directory for Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and WeStland, pliblished recently. The directory contains many curious surnames, ranging from birds and occupations to trees and animals. There are dozens of Hawkes, but only one Buzzard; 42 Butchers and 160 Bakers, hut only one Deacon. Trees range from two Sycamores to 14 Birches, and there are hosts of animals, including 43 Bulls, 64 Lam'bs, two Cows, three Rahbits, 11 Hares and three Badgers. There are no Deaths, but four Graves and two Coffins. There are 28 Loves, 17 Adams,^ and 12 Eves. Only one Idle'7 is listed itl the directory, whieh contains 1764 pages.
