Levin Breeder Imports Homing Pigeons
Latesfc arrivals in Levin from Britain are two pairs of homing pigeons recently imported by Mr. A. Wi Allen, who makes a hobby of breeding and training thfese birds. The pigeons, which have settled down well in their hew home, arrived 'by the Tropie on Deeember 11, but were not unloaded for some days after that date as. thd ship was heid up in the- stream while a wharf dispute was Settled. For two months on the water, they were in excellent condition and undaunted by their long sea voyage. One in fact laid tWo eggs on the first day in its new home. one of these proved fertiie. The birds were bought from Mr C. J. Cranstoun, of Surrey, England, the noted breeder- of the famous Logan strain. The new birds are fine speeimens of their breed and are the first imported by Mr. Allen. They dome from a line of long distanee raeing pigeons, 70o miles being the achievement of the strain. • Mr, Allen intends breeding from the ■birds and later racing them. The two pairs, landed in New Zealand, cost Mr. Allen a total bf £42, £5 being taken up in exchange and £11 in transporting them to New Zealand. They were actually ordered two years ago, but there was some diffiGulty at that time in regard to their export and permission was not granted by the British aut'horities until recently'. Their arrival will doubtless occasion much interest among local pigeon breeders. ♦ * +
