TAUPO, Dec. 29. The well-known Lake Hotel was completely destroyed by a fire which broke out at 5 o'clock this morning. Owned by the Gallagher family and with Mr. George Lisham as iicensee, the Lake Hotel was the only hotel in Taupo townsliip. It was fuliy oeyipied, a humber of the guests being" those previousiy booked at the Pisherman's Inn, which was destroyed by fi-re on November 21 last. The fire started in the kitchen, and within an hour the building was demoiished, the only reinaining portion being an annexe separated from the main building by a iew yards and usea as extra accommodation for guests. The many guests had difliculty m escaping. Little of the contents of tlie hotel was saved. The fire was first notieed oy a numI ber of campers in the Domain opposlte, and though the brigade did excellent . service it was impossible to save the ! building, which was- a' very. old oue, j built in the late 'seyehties. . . Though the cause- is not known, the fire — the third major outbreak w.ithin the past few months-^-emphasises tne urgent necessity for an adequate water supply for Taupo.
