Birthday Celebrations For Levin's Centenarian
About 30 friends were entertained at afternoon tea by Mrs. Annie Simmons when she celebrated her 103rd birthday on Monday at her home in Durham Street, Levin. Mrs. Simmons actively assisted in entertaining her friends by playing selections from Faust on the piano, showing how remarkably nimble her fingers still are. She had one great disappointment and that was not being able to join in a general conversation on account of being hard of hearing, but she loves to talk of her early musical life in London. Prior to the cutting of the birthday cake, Mrs, Simmons made a short but appropriate speech. The cake, although large, could not accommodate 103 candles and in consequence the figures were inscribed in the icing. ' 'T can still walk and have no wheel chair," Mrs. Simmons told a reporter. "If we had I would probably be trying to push it for somebody else." Many congratulatory telegrams, gifts and beautiful bouquets w.ere received by the giiest of honour. .
