South Africa And The Protectorates
Received '^u rsdav, 8.35 p.m. CAPE TOWN, Dec. 22. The South African Prime Minister, Dr, Malan, in a statement last night, expressed surprise at the recent announcement that British and Southern Rhodesian Ministers had agreed that in any change in the status of the Beehuanaland Protectorate, Southern Rhodesia's viewpoint concerning tne territory would be taken fully into consideration. Dr. Malan said the statement appeared to indicate that Southern Rnodesia was claiming co-partnership in the future disposal of the L'rotectorate and if possible, annexation of part of it. If so, he would like to point out "in all politeness, " that under the Anglo-Soutli Africa agreement of 1909, the disposal of Protectorates (Beehuanaland, Swaziland and Basutoland), was a matter exclusively and solelv between Britain and South Africa. " In the circumstances it must be regarded as surprising that such a statement should have been issuejd without any prior consultation with dr even notice to the Union Government," he added.
