RESTRICTED DIVIDENDS.

Received Thursday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 22. The three main organisations representing British industry — the Federation of British Industries, the Association of British Cliambers of •Commerce and the National Union of Manufacturers — have jointly recommended to their members that -the present policy of restricting dividends sliould be continued for a further year. In making this recommendation, however, they urge that there should be a drastic reduction in Government expenditure so that British industry may be encouraged by redueed taxatloh. A limitation of dividends wa.s first voluntarily undertaken by British mdustrialists in the spring of 1948. Though some firms have refused to eom- ' plv, the Federation of British IndusI tries recently pointed out that dunng j the Mareh to August period of 1949, I dividends had been unaltered or redueed in respect of more than 89 per cent. of the issued capital of all industrial public companies.
