Community Work Of Training Centre Boys Recognised

Fitting recognition of the valuable work which boys of the Levin Training Centre have undertaken in the community during the past 12 months was made on Wednesday night, when they were the honoured guests at a campiimentary social in St. Mary's Hall. It was organised by sthe vMayoress, Mrs. H.. B. Burdekin, in association with the R.S.A. Bowiing Club, Ladies' Bowiing Clu'b, Athletic and Cycling Club, Horticultural Society and Junior Chamber pf Commerce, bpdies which have benefited from the assistance of fhe boys. . . The youthful but enthusiastic audience was treated to a feast of mirth, music and magic, and from the, first item the concert was assuretf of outstanding success. At the conclusion of the items the boys found added enjoyment in an expellent supper prepared by members of the various bodies represented. Items were given by John Elliott (tgp dance) , Mrs. E.- • Ra-nson Myers (recitation) , Mr. E. RansOn Myprs (lightning sketches), Mr. T. Mayne (impersonations) , Mr. R. B. Stewart (black magic) , Mr. L. Woodmass (songs), Messrs. R. Lester and A: Bonner (Christmas carols), Miss- Doris Cleal (pianoforte solos). A play, entitled "Old Moore's Almanack," was presenred by members of the Levin Little Theatre Society. Those in the cast were Misses B, Blenkhorn, R. Williams and J. Clough and Messrs. G. Hesp and K. Hunter. "I think that this concert is just one of.the little things that the organisations of the town can do to show their appreciation of the great work that has been and is being done for Levin by the boys of the centre," said the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin. He yoiced warm appreciation. oi .the voluntary help that the boys had given towards the preparation of the R,S.A. bowiing green, without which assistanee, he said, it was highly improbable that the green would have been opened this year. "On behalf of the citizens of this town I would like to say that we feel proud of this institution that is in our midst and of the great spirit of citizenship .that the Doys have shown," continued the Maypr. "They realise that life is not only for ourselves, but that some of the greatest pleasures come through doing things for others." Mr. "Burdekin concluded by wishing the boys of the centre a merry Christmas and happy New Year.. * When thanking the boys on behalf of the R.S.A. Bowiing Club, Mr. H. J, Lancaster made special mention of thgir willingness with regard to the construction of the newly-opened green. "We owe a lot to these boys and only those who worked with them can know of the splendid co-operation and fiard work they devoted to the club," he said. Mr. A. O. Powell extended thanks to the centre on behalf of the Levin Horticultural Society and St. Mary's Ladies' Guild. He said that both organisations had benefited much by the help of the boys. A representative of the Levin Amateur Athletic ahd Cycling Club, Mr. G. Milroy, gave ipstances °of tbe courtesy whiph the boys extended to officials of the club when attending meetings. He concluded by thanking them tor the help they had given the club, Mrs, E. Sharp, for the Levin Ladies' Bowiing Club, also expressed her appreciation of the work done for her ciub by the boys. The president of the Levin" Junior Cham'ber of Commerce, Mr. R. L.ong, referred fo the centre as another organisation which had been adopted by the ehamber. "We have got on well together in the past ahd I feel sure that our happy relations will eontinue," he said. Replying on behalf of the centre, the manager, Mr, E. J. Stanley, said that he was most gratiffed tp hear that the town was proud of the institution. "I, too, am proud of the boys. Their cooperation does not only exist in the town," he stated. "It is also most prominent in the centre itself, where _ the boys do everything they to ensure the smooth running oi the organisation." The speaker "£aid that the centre regarded it as a privilege to be able to contribute to the success of Levin, and that the goodwih of the citizens was much appreciated. The Mayor then thanked the artists and all those who had contrftmted to the success of the 'evening. '
