Borough Council's Meeting

The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening and was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald. Those • present were Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, R. S. Downes, 'L. G. Sayer and C. G. Wishart. Apologies for absence were received froni Crs.' C. M. Cronquest and H. Aitchison. The Local Government Loans Board notified that the • water supply loan of £1800 had been sanctioned. On the rqotion of Cr. Clayton, the matter was left in the hands of the Mayor and ,the town clerk with po'wer to act. • Replying to the council's request for . additional street lights, the Horowhenua Electric Power Board stated tliat the installation was being kept steadily in view by the board. It was proposed by Cr. Bateman that in accordance with section 76 of the Rating Act, 1925, an additional charge of ten per cent. be added to all rates unpaid after February 22, 1950. The motion was carried. It was proposed . and carried that the fees for the registration of dogs for the borough for the year commencing January, 1950, be fixed as follows: — For each dog kept solely for the purpose of herding sheep and cattle, 2s 6d, no person being entitled to have registered more than three dogs at.the reduced rate of 2s 6d; for any other dog, 10s. It was resolved that the next meeting of the council be held on Tuesday, January 17, at 8 p.m. The chairman of the domain committee, Cr. Clayton, reported that some trouble was being experienced in keeping the domain in order due to the motor mower breaking down. Repairs had riow been carried out and the wofk was being pushed ahead as quiekly as possible. Attention would also be given the beautifying areas in Plimmer Terrace prior to the Christmas holidays. In regard to repairs to the domain .paddling pool, Cr. Clayton suggested that this work be left over until after the. holidays. This was agreed to by the council. The chairman of the building committee, Cr. Bateman. advised. that his committee had nothing of special interest to report. Plumbing work on one of the council's dwellings would be carried out as soon as possible. Cr. Downes, chairman of" the library committee, stated that arrangements had been made for the closing of the library over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Books were being withdrawn Very well and it was noticeable that more subscribers were using the library in the evening than during the afternoon. It was resolved that the chairman of the works committee, Cr. Sayer, engage labour required to carry out the work of improving the water supply in the Margaret Stree.t area. The Mayor conveyed seasonal greetings to members of the council, the borough staff and their wives. All present reciprocated these good wishes. The passing foi; payment of accounts amounting to £100 15s 8d terminated the business of the meeting.
