Coaching Is Improving Local Runners

At the Levin Amateur Athletic and Cycling Clubs weekly sports' on Monday night the group of runners which attend the newlyformed coaching class showed much improved form. Miss S. Rose ran two of the best races of her career to date when sne won the 100 and 50 yards events in fine style. Showing improved starting technique, she proved to the satisfaction of her coach and herself the axiom that a fast start is conducive to a fast race. P. Ryan must learn that by running on his opponent's shoulder in a 220 yards race he is traversing extra distance. An astute runner will trail his opponent and at an opportune moment put in a sustained burst to take the lead. Worthy of special mention is the great performance put up by M. Hai tley at Shannon on Tues- " day evening. This runner ran in the 880, 440, 220 and 160 yards events, gaining one first and two thirds. However, he must realise that to hope to keep going at that rate would be foolish. He should select one race and then corrcentrate on it. Although the Levin men's A relay team was unopposed on Monday evening, the members ran a smart 440 yards. A pleasing feature was the efflcient manner •in which the toatten changed; hands. At Shannon on Tuesday ; night they had an easy win,'1 coming in wifh about 15 yards to spare. It was certain that many valuable yards were gained with the fast change-overs. r.
