Junior Rep. Cricket Gives Added Interest
"Sqtiare Leg")

Satu5rday was the last occaSion on which local competition gahies will be played in 1949. For most of the players in the district their nex't games will not be un'til Saturday, January 17. HoweVer, -during Christmas week a HdTo\vhenua team -will play 'against the Wellington Brabin Shield team and a Karori XI. In the last two seasons Horowhenua has played the Wellington Brabin Shield team at the Basin Resexve and on both occasions has been enthusiastically received by Wellington cric-ket . supporters. The shield team consists of players under the age of 20 who are considered to be among the most prpmising of Wellington's younger section. These lads are extremely keen, -on their cricket and play the game / with a great deal of vigour. Some of them are at present in senior ■grade, which gives ample evidence of their worth to Wellington. This same team will play at Levin on! Decemfcer 26 and 27 and the fol-! ,■ lowers who attend can be assured; of bright and entertaining cricket. j The match is to be played on the| Weraroa Domain and will start onj •both days at 10.30 a.m. The Karori team to play at j Levin on December 30 and *31 is actually a touring side, comprised i of senior players with a sprinklingi of promising colts. Boxing Day will be a red letter| day for the Horowhenua juniors. | On that day a representative side1 will meet a Manawatu junior team on the Levin Domain. During thej past two seasons the association ! has made every effort to keep the junior competition on a sound footing and it is pleasing to ftndl that junior representative matchesj are on the way so early in the: season. The opportunity to gain representative honours will be an added incentive for these lads i and should helo to raise the standard of cricket in the district. It is to be hoped that the publEC will give the young players plenty of encouragement by attending the matches and offering their unbiassed applause.
An indispensable requirement during the representative matches are the men in the white coats. Umpires have a difRculf and tiring task. They must give the game their unerring attention throughout the whole day. Theirs is an unenviable lot and for their \ oluntary / services the associa1ion and players join in expressing hearty thanks for the job the umpires are doing. "Square Leg" takes this opportunity of wishing readers the compliments of the Season.
