Syria's Third Coup In Nine Months
Received Tuesdav, 7 p.iri. DAMASCUS. Dec. 20. Rvria is without a Government following its third coup d'etat within nine months. Units of the Svrian army undcr Colonel Adeeh Chichakli, oc«'upied all Government buildings. The Government has resigned. President ITashem el Atassv who was elected last week, could not be sworn in as planned last niglit "because of a sudden illness. ' ' Observers believe the conp was a move by the Svrian army to forestall the proposed nnion of Syri a and Traq. Atassv was to have sworn an Act for the unity of Arab countries. ObserveTs say they think the conp occnrred on the day of the swearing in to stop Atassy taking this oath. Golonel Chichakli ordered tanks to surround the home of | the former army cliief, General Sami el TTinnaoui. Gunfire vas heard hnt General TTinnaoui 's fate is not known. I Colonel Chichakli helped General Hinnaoui to depose the army chief, Golon,el j Husni el Zaim. in the coup last Mareh. I Colonel Zaim was later executed. The reason given by the army for the latest coup was to stop "plotfing against the safety of the army, oountrv and Republican regime, in conjunction with foreign elements. "
