Sterling Area Earns More And Cuts Purchases

Received Wed., 11.35 a.m. WASHINGTON, Dec. 20. The sterling area dollar deficit for the quarter ended September 30 was 106,000,000 dol-~ lars less than for the previous quarter-and Brttain's dollar gap was 78,000,000 dollars less. Department of Commerce returns show that United States exports to tlie sterling area as a whole exceeded United States imports from the area by 196,000,000 dollars for the / quarter ended September 30, compared with 302,000,000 dollars for the previous quarter. The comparative figuresfor Britain were 52,000,000 and 130,000,000 dollars. The Department said. that the sterling area dollar gap was reduced by the curtailment of purchases from the United States plus greater earnings.
