Strong Market Demand For Fruit
Messrs Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report tliat at last week's saie there was a particularly strong demand for peaches, apricots, cherries and dessert plums, while a slight improvement was felt in the sale of tomatoes, with hot-house ripes realising up to Is 5d per l'b. In the vegerable section cauliflowers, . silver beet and stringless beans attracted very keen bidding, while green peas on the other hand were in over supply. There was a very keen deftiand in the poultry sale and all prime birds brought attractive figures. - ^ Quotations were as follows: — Vegetables: t French beans, 7d; "runners, ls 3£d; stringless, ls 2d; peas,' 5-£d to 8id; tomatoes, hothouse, ripe,' ls od; green, ls 2d to ls 5d; coloured, ls to ls 2d; red, lOd to ls ld ail per l'b; beetroot, 15s to 24s; cabbage, 2s to 4s; earrots, 16s; lettuce, 6s to 13s 6d; rhubarb, 10s 6d to 14s 6d; swedes, 10s 6d;'-spinach, 7s to 15s 6d all cases; siiver beet, 19s 6d case; cauliflowers, 20s to 25s; potatoes, 12s to 22s; marrows, 15s, ali sacks; spring onions, 6d to 2s 6d; mint, 2d to 4d; parsley, "4d to 8d; raddish,. 4d to 6d, all bunches; cucumbers; 16s to 22s box. Fruit: Plums, dessert, 12s to 17s 6d; cookers, 3s to 10s; peaches, 12s to 19s; choice trays, 14s to 18s 6d; apricots, 12s to 22s 6d all half cases; cherries, choice, 20s to 33s; others, 15s to 19s all boxes.
