The Horowhenua Cricket Association is fortunate in having seven junior teams in the competition this year. This is a good sign for future cricket in the district and it is the duty of all senior players to see that the' juniors get avery form of encouragement possible. • _ It has been said that any assor ciation with a strong junior seetion will always have a worthwhile senior grade. At present the junior grade has players of a very wide ranga of ability and because of this it is hoped that the captains of the stronger teams will recognise the fact that the game is more important than the . points attached to winning. Let it be honed that the junior teams will cohtinue to fiourish and be the sfcepping stones for the many young and promising players. Appeals Ancl Decisions. The appeal most frequently ma'de to an umpire is that of leg before wicket. On many occasions it is very apparent that the person making ihe appeal is more concerned with getting rid of the batsman than with the correctness of the appeal. It is the duty of every player,, especially bowlers, to be familiar with the rules regarding leg before wicket. A player should not appeal on the ott" chance of gaining a decisio'n. It must also be remembered that the umpire will see thangs on occasions that will not be seen by those appealing, due to his position on the field. Always rememoer that the possibility of the ball hicting the siumps is far less than that of missing them. Ihe chance of an l.b.w. is therefore very slighff. | Whatever the decision givfen, remember that it is given in good faith and that a player should not complain if noc in agreement with it. Manakau has proved themselves to be a very strong team and continued on then winning way Qn Saturday with an eight point victory over Coilege B. Manakau won the toss and put CoJege in to bat, Buckingham and Frederikson opening up vigorously against ihe bowlers. The latter's wicket was the first to fall afier he had made 17 runs. Buckingham continued to bat well and returned an excellent 43. Unfortunately, the remainder of the team found the bowling of O'Rourke a bit tough and their combined effori oniy yielded 37 runs. The Manakau innings opened in a somewhat uncertain manner but Williams laid the foundations for a respectable tctal by knocking ■ up a splendid cer.tury. He was supported by McDonald and Aikins, who scored 26 (not out)
and 20 respectively. Manakau declared at 185 for six wickets. Burnell bowled well for Coilege and took three for 38 off 12 overs. In their second visit to the wicket Coilege made 73, of which Frederikson compiled a splendid 39 (not out). For a young player Frederikson has been showing distinct promise and it is a pity that he wid soon leave the district. The Coilege B team (junior grade) consists moslly of young boys who have no greater qualification than their enthusiasm for the game. They are to- be.complimented on the way they h&ve stuck to it and endeavoured to provide all their opponents with stiff opposition. - 'j —
