Auckland Maoris Drinking Moderately
AUCKLAND, Dec. 14. . Since the first novelty of the new liquor laws has worn off, Auckland 's 10,000 to 11.000 Maoris have adjusted themselves creditably to the clianged conditions, Mr Waka Clarke, Auckland Maori welfare officer, said today. Recent surveys showed that the Maoris were not taking home excess quantities of liquor and there had been a definite improvement in their conduct in hotels. • The Waikato welfare officer, Mr W. Herewind, said that on the whole conditions were better than before the legislation was aniended. Disquieting features, however, were the larger numbers between the ages of 16 and 18 now drinking, and the inereased amount of liquor consumed by Maoris on public works jobs. Tribal leaders hoped to controi illegal drinking in pas. There were very few Maori women drinking in hotels in the Waikato. The position in Rotorua was generally mueh the same, according to tlie welfare officer there, Mr Z. H. Mitchess. Tribal committ'ees and wardens were strictly enforeing the prohibiting of liquor in pas.
