Inconvenient Delay With New Phone Directory

Although the new Manawatu telephone directory has been eXpected by the public for some time now, it has not yet appeared, causing some incohvenience to those many people who seek to eontact the numerous subscribers. who have had their telephones instalied since the last book was published in November, 1948. Last year's book. was not actually issued until January, although it was dated November, and from enquiries made at the Levin Posl Office this morning it would appear that it will be that date again before the new books are published although advice waa previously received that they would be distributed in Octoher. One section of the post office staff which would probably welcome the new books is the telephone ekohange, which is undoubtedly being put .to much extra trouble in supplying numbers to subscribers — a big task foi this small staff, which is working at considerable pressure withoui any addi'uional work. A post office official stated ih reply to a question today that since the 1948 book was issued in January some 180 new connections had been made up to the end of November. Not all of those, he added, would be contained in the new book, although every effort was made to include as many as possible, as the deadline for additions and alterations was early Septemher.
