Hindus Demonstrate Against Social Progress
Received Tues-lav 7 p.m. LONDON, Dee. 13. , The poiiee baton charged outside the Indiaa Parliament last night to disperse a violent erowd of 500 demonstrating against the Hindn Code Bill, says the Daily Telegraph 's New Delhi eorrespondent-. Several people were injured and 60, incdiuling five women, arrested. The objeets of the Bill are the reform of marriage, divorce, adoption and suc- ! cession praetices in Hindu society and generally to give women more rights, including the right of inheritance. Reaetionary Hindus of all classes and eastes feel that the Bill strikes at the root of Hindu society, breaking up the joint family system and destroying a way of life with the sanetion of at least. 2000 years behiird it. The Congress Party itself is divided on the issue and even some Ministers are believed to favour an indetinite postponement of the Bill. The Prime Minister, Mr Nehru, 'has made it clear he regards the Bill as the: key to India 's future. Ile believes that if it is passed, India will have detinitely set her foot on the way to becoming a progressive and "secular" State. The strength of the opposition to his view, has yet to be disclosed.
