Economists To Survey Hill Country Farms
DANNEVIRK7, Dec. 13. The first detailed survey of the r-conomics of farming a large area of hill country in New Zealand will be commenced in Southern Hawke'S Bay early in the New Year. A team of trained farm economists from the staff of the Deparonent of Agriculture will tackl^ the rather formidable task of interviewing every farmer in the Akitio County, collectlng facts ond figures from each of 192 holdings. j The Akitio County is consider- 1 ed to be a fairly typical block of , the North Island hill cOuntry in that it has both large and sma'lll holdings, a proportion of deterior- j ated and also reverted country, 1 the rabbit problem and the inevitable hill country problem of long hauls on indifferent roads. Information will be sought from each holding upon a wid'e variety| of subjects and it is hoped to ge't information which will be invaluable to those concerned with the problems of the vast area of North Island hill country and the welfare of settlers in many cases labouringi undjer evar-increasing difficultiOs to make a reasonable living in these- cortiparatiWely' isolated districts.
