Shannon Borough Matters

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, when the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, presided over Crs. B. Clayton, V. J.. Bateman, R. S. Downes, C. M. Cronquest, L. G. Sayer and H. Aitchison. in a communication, the district civil engineer of the New Zealand Railways forwarded a plan shotying the proposed', improvements to the drainage system at the Shannon railway stockyards. -The sclieme had been submitted to the Medical Ofdcer of Health and the district health inspector, and had met with their approval, the letter said. The estimated cost was £700 and apart from a section of piping under the roadway, the entire scheme was on railway property. Following a discussion it was resolved to inform the department that althougli . the scheme had received the approVal of the Health Department,- the council wished-it to be placed' on record that it accepted no reSponsibility in the case of a nuisance arising. . . • Matters in connection with the Fire-'Sefvices Act were handed over to the council's representatiyes on the -Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade's committee to bring down a repbrt. v; A'request from the Main Highways Board for a report on.-all bridges ih the highways within the borough was held over urttil a later meetihg. Clayton, chairman of the domain committee, reported on matters in connectibn with the domain aiid -stated that information was being obtained as to the best method bf carrying out repairs to the paddling pool. Clayton also reported that the work of cleaning up the section next to the Councii Chambers was in progress. . - The chairman of the building committee, Cr. .Bateman, stated that three applications for fninor building permits were in order and on his motion the necessary per-, mits were approved. He also reported that two lights had been instailed in the domain buildings. - . Reporting on library matters, Cr. Downes, acting chairman of the library committee, said there had been a slight falling off in the number of books withdrawn from the library, although this was to be expected during the summer months. Cr. Downes added that most of the country subscribers had renewed their subscriptions and several more local subscribers had joined. The chairman of the works committee, Cr. Sayer, reported that the committee had carried out an inspection of the water supply in the Margaret Street area and had decided to replace part of the oneinch mains with two-inch piping. New beaters were required for the motor mower, the installation co'st being approximately £10. The coundeputation was given a goud hearcarried out. The Mayor and Cr. Bateman reported on their conference with members of the Palmerston North Hospital Board at Palmerston North, when Shannon's case for the erection of a maternity hospital was placed before the board. The deputation were given a good hearing and the board decided, that a representative of the Health Department would be asked to visit Shannon and then report on the position. The council extended thanks to members of the deputation for their effort and report, and it was stated that it seemed that some progress had been made. The Mayor also reported on his recent visit to Wellington and his interview with the Loans Board relative to the water supply ioan. Mr. Fitzgerald said that further advice could be expected from the board within the next two weeks. - Aecounts passed for payment amounted to £179 6s 9d
