Planes Too Fast For Human Endurance
Received klondav 7 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 4. There was no doubt that the United States possessed the "know how" to build practical aircraft that would fly at 1000 to 1500 or more miles an h'our said Mr Paul Johnston, Director of the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences, in a speech tonight. Mr Johnston, who is a member of the Researeh Development Board, Department of National De fen&e, said whether such planes would be useful as military weapons remained to be seen. \ "Obviously"we are approaehing the limits of human endurance with planes travelling a qnarter of a mile every second and requiring stresses jn any turn far more than present deviees to protect the pilot can sustain," he .said. "The obvions thing was to take the pilot out of such a vehicle. "Inter-Continental guided missiles with atomic or high explosive warheads are certainly under intensive study and development by every major Power in the world," he said.
