In Defence of Britain's Peanut Ssheme
Received Moriday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Dee. 5. The Colonial Secretary, Mr. CreechJones, and the Food Minister, Mr. Strac-hev, spoke in defence of Britain's controversiai East African ground. nuts seheme, in speeehes to their constituents last night. Mr. Creech-Jones said the cost of clearing the bush for ground nuts was £30 an acre compared with £50 to clear land in Queensland. He said it was, hoped to reduee the East African cleavance cost in 1950 to £11. Mr. Straehev said the £29,000,000 spent on the scheme was invested in an absolutelv indispensable task without which Britain could not snrvive. Re ferring to Press eriticism that a few thousand tons of nuts had cost £29,000,000, Mr. Strachey said: "It is ludierous to eharge the cost of the prnjeet's towns, harbonrs, railways and machinery against the fi.rst crop. "
