WORK STOPPED ON THIRD ATOMIC PILE
Received Mcradav, 7 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 5. Work has stopped on the laying of Britain's third atomic pile at Sallafield, West Cnmberland. This was announced a few hours after Mr Attlee told Parliament that euts were to be mado in expenditure in Governrnment deparrments. There is no offieial statement on the reason for the cessation of the worK. Tlie third pile Avas to have been larger than the first two with the chimney rising 700 feet compared with 400 feet. Loeal residents welcomed the decision to abandon the third pile because thev have been appreliensive about the proximitv of the plant to their homes. Work on the main buildings and the other atomic pile chimneys, is well advanced.
