A drenching downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning caught many early shoppers unawares this morning, sending them scurrying for shelter. The deluge, which lasted over half an hour, taxed ■ storm water pipes and gutters, causing extensive flooding in most parts of Oxford Street. . Completely isolated by , miniature lakes were two central 'poihts near the post office and Government offices in Bath Street. The drenching rain swept down the entire town finding weak spots in spouting, roofs and verEtndcis » Readings taken by Mr. H. Harvey, of Cambridge Street, over a period this morning give evidence of today's rain storm being the heaviest experienced in the town for some time. For the four hours between 8 a.m. and noon .72 inches of rain fell. A further .10 inches fell during the night, making a total of nearly one inch of rain in 15 hours.
