Good Performances By Local Athletes
The team mates, Ian Mudge { and Ron Roach, who performed so well in running first and second at Hataitai last week, went even better at the Petone sports on Gaturday. Mudge woh the open short-limit 880 yards event most convincingly, while Roach, running for Horowhenua College, had an easy win in the secondary schools 880 yards event. In the final of the five mile cycle handicao at the same fixture Des. Smith filled third place, off 45 yards, conceding winner and runner-up to competitors off 140 and 135 yards respectively. in the three mile handicap for B grade riders, Otaki's entrants were well to the fore, E. Walsh finishing second, S. Snowdon third and W. Walsh fourth. Commeriting on the performance of Mudge in running second the previous week, a prominent sports writer states that his time was excellent and that Mudge moved through his field Che was the back-marker) with excellent judgment. This writer further avers that Mudge's form is much better than it was at the same stage last summer, and improved performances in national company at Christchurch in March are predicted. •
