Down The Manawatu: World's Longest Boat Race

On Boxing Day, Monday, December 26, 1949, entrants in the world's lohgest rowing race will begin their 60 mile journey from the Fitzherbert Bridge, Palmerston North, to the clubhouse of the Manawatu Boating Club at Foxton beach. This race will b.e the third organised and sponsored by the Manawatu Boating Club and there is every indication that this year's event will eclipse all others. This year, provided entries allow it, the race will be run in three elasses, class A for canoes, class B for rowing boats up to two oars, and class C, three rowers or more. Entrants will this year draw for positions at the barrier and the same rigid safety precautions will be observed with two-way radio keeping in touch with the crash boat and advising the public of results. Skipper D. T. Dilkes who firsb sailed down the river in 1919 has once again taken over the organisation of the race and if he takes charge of the crash boat again it is likely that -he will be the only club member to make the journey. Again In Two Sections. The race will again be in sections • Palmerston North — Shannon, Shannon — Foxton Beach and the Shannon people are running a gala and sports meeting in conjunction with vthe race. In addition to the Coley Cup for two-oared boats and the Davey . Dilks Paddle, for canoes, there is" now a new tro'phy presented by the Agnew Refrigeration flrm for three-oar roweis or more. Entries close for the race on December 20.
