Big Gathering At Waikanae To Foster Sport
A very successful gala day was held at Waikanae during the weekend under the auspiees. of the Horowhenua Marching Association, ihe object being to foster this grand summer sport. Great preparations for the event were made b!y the Waikanae team. Huia Juniors, and their support ers under the guidance of Mr. Diavis. Teams attended from Palmers--ton North, Foxton, Levin, Otaki, Petone and Wellington, some 14 teams facing the judges who officiated to ensble them to gain an idea of the worth of their performances. The president of the Manawatu Centre wolcomed the teams a,nd spectators. The proceedings were fchen officially opened fcy the president of the Wellington Marching i Ass:cia.ion, Mr. J. Meldrum, who i is a so an executive member oi .the New Soaland Agsociat.on. The Horowhenua Highland Pipe ' Band and the Otaki Silver Band supplied musie for rhe marching events. The judges were Mcssrs F. Carrington (Manawatu Centre's chief judge) , J. Douglas, W. Frassr, D j Convery (pace counter), all oi i Levin; J. Meldrum, Wellington; and L. Nicholas (Hutt Valley chief .judge). T'he results were as follows: — Caledonians (Levin) 1, Reb.els Hutt) 2, Bandoliers (Otaki) 3. In the junior class Tuis (Otaki), Marshalls (Foxton) , Cavaliers (Petone) and Huia (Waikanae) were adjudged the four best teams in that order. The leaders' results were:— Senior: S. Smith (Caledonians) 111, G. Sundberg (Ambassadors) 109, E. Taylor (Banaoliers) 108. Junior: P. Bevan (Tuis) 100, L. Marshall (Marshalls) 99. The salute at the march past at the commencement was taken by Mr. J. Meldrum. At a suitable juncture the^ serpentine march was displayed and under the control of Mr. J. Macfariane, marshal and chief coa.ch, reached the usual high standard which has become a feature of his . ingenuity in showing off the kaleidoscopic effect of the very attractive^" costumes worn by the teams. ? .. Centre Meeting. . At the conclusion of the display the Manawatu Centre held a meeting at which it was decided to appoint a panel of selectors to ehoose three teams to represent the centre in the North Island championships, which will be held in Auckland in January of next year. This procedure has .beeome necessary as a result of the centre's inability to hold its championships till after the North Island championship eptries close. The method of selection will be based upon last season's performances and the aetual performances of the tes.ms up to December 3 of this year. The panel comprises Messrs F. Carrington (centre chief- judge), J. Macfarlane (centre chief coach) gnd W. Fearnley (coach of Bandoliers, Otaki) . The teams selected will be announced on December 8, thus enrbling parents and girls ample time and opportunity to make arfangements, besides giving the teams a greater length of time for coneentrated practice.
