The first Horowhenua representative cricket teams ior tne season have been chosen and in all probability" the players picked feel that their selection is the fruit of practice and keenness. Others may be left with a sense of disappointment. Unfortunately, these mixed feelings are always evident 'when representative teams are announced. However, it do.es provide those not selected with the opportunity to prove the selectors' mistakes, and the more fortunate to try and justify their selection.
The local A team will meet a strong Manawatu team on the Weraroa Reserve, while the B team is to play Rangitikei B at the Levin Domain. The A team has put up some exeellent stands against Manawatu on previous. occasions and we look to them to make a good fight of t qn Saturday. It' is hoped that ihe Levin public will award these matches its support and enthusiasm. As the A team -contains many names unknown to this district, I take this opportunity of introducing all members of the team to the public. A Weiler (Weraroa) is a batsman who has been thorqughly drilled in the fundamentais. His strokes are well executed and his placing is a source of continua worry to opposing fieldsmen. While not a brilliant wicket-keeper, he is very steady and makes few mistakes. Weiler has played good grade cricket in Wellington. The Foxton player, C. Carmont, is a forceful left-hand bat and has represented Horowhenua in the past. He is a fairly fast righthand bowler and visiting batsmen will have to treat him with respect. H. Rice (Otaki) is well known in this district as a former Wellington Plunket Shield captain. He is a first class bat and when in form is very difficult to shift This player has made a good start this season, compiling two centuries, and in one. case still carrying his bat. He has captained this team for a number of years. It was due mainly to the captaincy of J. McNeile that Shannon were able to win the Hall Chaf.enge Shield last season. This player knocks up runs in quick time and can usually be relied
upon to provide a useful tatai. Another player who has represented Horowhenua on many o.ccasions is K. Hudson, of Levin. He is a good hatsman and a steady medium-paced bowler. He has on mapy occasions been the mainstay of the team. The College player, G. Andrews, is a fair bat and a steady bowler who has had reasonaible success on previous occasions. He is also ] a past representative of this district. ^ 1 G. McHaffie (Otaki) has the qualities of a first class batsman and is a bowler with whom it is foolish to take risks. McHaffie can look back with pride on the fact that while still a school boy of 17 years, he represented Manawatu. He has played cricket for the Dunedin University. This is his first season in the Horowhenua, The Levin player, W. Galloway, has previously represented this district with a measure of success. He is a forceful bat and always likely to get among the runs. E. Barraud (Old/ Boys) is a former Hawke Cup player. He is a very hard hitter and a steady, medium-paced swing bowler. It can be difficult to . score from him when he is bowling a good length. While not a very fast bowler, ASaunders (Weraroa) is considered the pace bowler of the team. On previous occasions he has been devastatirig and usually gets the lion's share of the wickets. S.aunders is also a much more usefui bat than most people are prepared to admit. The team, on paper, shows definite promise and it is to be hoped that it justifies the confidence placed in it by the selectors.
