News From Paraparaumu

The Paraparaumu branch of the Women's Division of Federated Farmers held its November meeting in the Anglican Hall, presided over by Mrs. C. Connolly. Mrs. Doidge presented a humorous recitation and the competitions were won as follows:— Sugar bag competi'tion, Mrs. H. Tyson; best fiower, Mrs. C. Connolly; best vegetable, Mrs. Frederick. Afternoon tea was served. •The Paraparaumu Croquet Club had a very successful opening day recentiy. It was largely attended by members and friends, who enjoyed the several competitions. The Paraparaumu golf links are undergoing several improvements whic'h should add largely to their popularity. A new pavilion is in the course of erection and flower beds and shrubs have been planted for its general beautification. Mr. F. H. Clarkson, who is a patient in the Wellington Hospital, is now making steady progress. Mr. W. Howell, who was the victim of a motor cycle accident, is also on the way to recovery. Institute's Meeting The Paraparaumu Women's Institute celebrated Ls 20th fcirthday with a party in the Anglican Hall. Mrs. N. F. Hornsby welcomed all members and visitors. A very entertaining programme was given and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The first item was a playreading in costume, "Mrs. W'hipples Hushand," those taking" part being Mesdames E. Weston, J. Crawford, G. C. Maelean and W. Hercock. A sketch, "Cinderella," was contributed by Mesdames A. Simpson and P. Lee, and Mrs. E. Priee gave two humorous sketches, "Lizzie Goes Shopping" and "A Hindu's Paradise." The "children's concert" caused much merriment, members taking themselves back to school days with humorous sketches, pianoforte pieces and verse speaking. Those taking part were Mesdames I. J. Mclsaac, E. Weston, A. Simpson, W. Hercock, J. Crawford, Hickman and G. C. Maolean. "The Family Group" was another mi'rth provoking entertainment ably acted by Mesdames A. Simpson, G. C. Maclean, Hickman, I. J. Mclsaac, J. Crawford and E. Weston. A large cake,' made and iced fey Mrs. Osborne, was much admired with its 20 candles and the Women's Institute badge very true
in every detail. The cake was cut by Mesdames C. Connolly, Natusc'h, Hornsby and Wakelin (president of the Raumati South Institute) . Aftemoon tea was served.
