In Memory Of The Late President Roosevelt
Requests that the eoastal highway to Paekakariki be named Roosevelt Highway to perpetuate the memory of President Roosevelt had still not been acceded to by the Government, stated the annual report of the British American Cooperation Movement, presented at its' annual meeting recently. Alternative s'ubjbcts for naming after President Roosevelt had been suggested by the Government, but the * executive of the movement thought that they fell short of being a fitting tribute of remembrance to a great wartime leader. The president of the movement (Mr. J. S. Barton) suggested that if the movement could persuade enough members of the, public to use the name Roosevelt Highway, the movement would eventuaHy get rec.qgnition of the name. The movement had a number of subscriptions in hand towards the cost of a memorial plaque, which it was proposed to erect on Aotea Quav to commemorate the first lariding of the American forces in 1942- / "This country "has not as yet erected any memorial to our American . allies, who guaranteed us from Japanese aggressiori in the dark days of the war," the report added.
