Protests Bring Withdrawal Of Serial Story
WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. Following protests from parents and teachers, the serial story, "Our Street," on the escapades of a gang of New Zealand schoolboys, has been withdrawn from the School Journal. The official explanation issued by the Education Department attributes the withdrawal of the stories to "misunderstandings about the purpose for which they were written." The chief inspector of primary schools, Mr. D. G. Ball. said today that the escapades of this type of boy were told in prompt, frank discussion and enabled teachers to show more vividly the likeiy consequences of some unsocial acts. Some teachers and organisations (chiefly in Otago ,and Taranaki) had objected to the nature Of the stories. On the other hand, letters oraising the approaeh to this conduet problem had been received by the department.
