Russia Plans Canal From Danube To Oder
Reeeived Friday 7 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 18 ' Russia is sponsoring a project t link the Oder with the Danube by » canal, thus providing a continuous wa terway from the Baltic to the Biack Sea, says the Daily Telegraph's Vienm correspondent quoting reports from Bratisiava. Polish and Czech engineer^ are reported fo haye already carried oui preliminary work ijnder Russian supc vision. It is expe&ljed the work will be coinpleted in 1955 with Poland's mam part being the expansion of the form er German port of Stettin to provith greater capacity than Antwerp. Czeeho„ slocakia is providing the bulk of tht technical equipment for the port for which she will be allott.ed a free zone of the harbour. Two faetors may jeopardise the scheme's completion: Firstly, the short age within the Cominform countries of engineers, skilled labourers and speeial - ised equipment; secondly, the attitude of Yugoslavia which is one of the most important Danube States. If the new Danube schetne is to come into being, Tito's regime will have to co-operate oi be replaced.
