Big Increase In Local Butter Fat Production

A mild winter and a very good season for grass were the two main reasons given by the managing-secretary of the Levin Co-operative Dairy Company, Mr. j; M. Parsons, when commenting on the large butter fat production for the Levin factsry and others in the district during the 1949 season. The figures for the three monthly period from June 1 to October 31 of the current year show an increase of 130 tons of butter over the figures for the corresponding period last year, The secretary was of the opinion that the peak period had been

reac'hed and that on a casual survey the 1949 figures would equal those attained during 1936-37 season when the factory's ouiput reac'hed over 2000 tons. There were other reasons that had to be taken into consideration. No new farms had been opened up in the district but a feturned Setvicemen's block at Linton had been added to the factory's supp.iexs. This however, was not large enough to have added appreciatively to the increase. Manures were not rationed this season as they were in the1 1948 season. A few more cows were being milked but not enough to have a direct bearing on production. The dairv cows were however, reeeiving the benefit of extra veterinary attention. By this means, the secretary stated, a large number of cows would be kept in production longer than under usual circumstances. Details" of the output for October have been supplied as follows (the figures are in tons) with last year's returns provided for comparison: — ■Rnt.tpr
