Hydatids In Lambs Causes Much Concern >
' (PeY
- DANNEVIRKE, NOV. 18. Justiflcation for the vigorous campaign in Southern Hawke's Bay under the auspices of the Feflerated FarmHks against hydatids,- was e given by the inspection of lamibs at. the works entered in the New. Zealand Meat Board's fat iamb competiiioh. Eighty-two per Cent of the lambs entered in the competition were , affected by hydatids, There were only 20. clean livers of the totals of 114 inspected when the lambs were pn the hooks. There were only two completely c'ie,an lines in the 38 pens judged. In the inspection of livers, the smallest spot was regarded as an infection, but some of these spots would calcify and ultimately disappear as the lambs grew. Although the incidence of hydatids in the lambs examined was regarded as high, it is con-* sistent with the infection in the Southern Hawke's Bay and Manawatu districts over the past few years, Tn view of the campaign conducted during the past 12 months, it is regarded as disappointing. The indications are that although the majority of farmers are dosing t'heir dogs as a preventive measure, some are failing to do so, It is estimated that there are 14,000 dogs in the Manawatu and Southern Hawke's Bay districts and the dosing of each dog four times a year prevents a major operation.
