N.Z. Delegate Outspoken On Soviet Peace Move
NEW YOEK, Nov. li. Sir Carl Berendsen, New Zealand repreaentative at United Nations, to-day denounced the Soviet proposal for « Big Five Peaee Pact put for ward Dy Mr. Vyshinsky yesterday, as "one in a long series of phony resolutions for purely propaganda purposes. " He drew an analogy between the present Soviet charges and the Uchildish absurdities" of Nazi propaganda in 1930. Sir Carl, who was speaking in Unitea Natons' politieal committee's debate on the Russian proposal, said: "We aee the guilty aceusing the innoeent. We see intentions attributed to others which are held by tliose who attribnte them. We see again the repcaxecl shrieks of the warmonger which HitJer used. ' ' Sir Carl said New Zealand would vote against all paragraphs in the Soviet reeolution on the ground that not one oi them was a genuine attempt to meet the situation in the world today. New Zealand would support the essentials of tne United States-British resolution. The Yugoslav delegate, Mr. Milovan Djilas, eharged Russia with appearlng before United Nations as the ehampioii of peaee while exerting military, economic and politieal pressure in eifOTts to oust Marshal Tito. Mr. Djilas also aa•sailed the Western Powers for "condueting war propaganda" and said Yugoslavia couldn't support in their entirety either the Russian or Unitea States-British proposals. The committee adjourned until tomorrow.
