Mr. Fraser Defands Land Settlement Act

In two years' time it would not be necessary to go further in the compulsory purchasing of land for servicemen's settlement as the Minister of Rehabilitation, Mr. Skinner, had stated that all the servicemen should have been provided for in that time said the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, speaking in Levin on Thursday night. The Laibour Government was prepared to make the same facilities available to young civilian farmers with the exception of .compulsorily taking land for their settlement. The agricultural colleges such as Massey and Lincoln would be there for them. The reason for the Returned Servicemen's Land Settlement Act was to assist returned men only on to the land and if the Government had not fixed the priee at 1942 values there would have been the same orgy of speculation in land as followed the previous war. "It was the best thing we did for the country and the returned men themselves passed a resolution stating that they did not see anything better than the Act put through by the Labour Govern-' ment," he added.
