Swimmers Brave Elements To Open Season
Overcoats and scarves were more in evidence than swimming suits when the Levin Swimming Clut held its official opening in the Coronation Baths on Wednesday night. Nevertheless, . despite the chilling wind, the water remained at a temperature of 68 degrees and many enthusiasts braved . the elements :to participate in the first . races of the new season. Members of visitihg elubs took part in the events. The results were as follows:— Men's 25 yards. — First division: R. Bentley 1, J. Cameron 2, D. Rikihana 3. Second division: G. Cameron 1, D. Rikihana 2, K. Parker 3. * Women's 25 yards.— Miss A. Merriman 1, Miss J. Wells 2, Miss I. Blackburn 3. Men's 50 yards.— D. Rikihana 1, G. Cameron 2, W. Travers 3. Last season the Levin club was most fortunate in winning several Manawatu titles. This was stated by the president of the club, Mr. W. G. Phillips, when declaring the season open. In every case "the titles were won the hard way — that is by months of hard work and serious training. "I would like to take this opportunity to advise all the young and enthusiastic swimmers to learn by watehing the more experienced swimmers, and to heed the advice given by instructors," he continued. ' Mr. Phillips said that it was the object of the club to get instructional films for advanced swimmers as the season progressed. In conclusion, he extended a welcome to visiting members of the Levin-Waitarere Surf Life-saving Club, the Foxton Surf Life-saving Club and the Foxton Swimming Club. At the conclusion of the president's spsech, local members and visitors were entertained with in~ structional films shown by Mr. A. Cole. _______
