Shop Owners Must Repair Verandah Posts

The crazy angle of some of Levin's verandah posts was again brought to the notice of the Levin Borough Council at its meeting on Monday night. Some comment was also made on the unsafe condition of some of the verandahs themselves. "If we can condemn a building, then we should be able to condemn part of one," said Cr. D. J. Sweetzer. Many of the verandah's in the town had seen better days. He drew to the council's attention the fact that a slight knock by a car was sufflcient to push posts inwards from the base, and he thought that some anchorage for these posts should be insisted on by the council in the interest of public safety. "We would be tioing a public duty if we insisted on the owners of the shops making these posts safe," he a'dded. The building inspfector, Mr. H. T. Tilyaxd, said the trouble was that when an old post was taken down it was merely sawn off at footpath level and the new post erected on 'top of the base of the old one. When first put in posts were usually sunk into the street. The council decided' to take action under the borough by-laws ( if nothing was 'done to effect the correct a'djustment of "these offending posts after requests to do so !had been made.
