Chinese Nationalists Detain British Steamer
(Per Press AssociationJ ■ Received Monday 8.50 p.m. HONG KONG, Nov. 7. A Chinese Nationalist warship at the mouth of the Yangtze intercepted the British steamer Tsinan en route to Jlong Kong with a eargo from Commun-ist-held Slianghai. Negotiations between ihe two ships are proeeeeding under the eyes of a British warship standing by a short distanee away. The Chinese warship told the Tsinan she would be released only on condition that she returned to Slianghai and discharged her eargo. The Tsinan refused and the position reached a deadloek. A report from the Nationalist base in Chusan Jslands quotes the Chinese naval 1 ('ommander Niyuesi as saying the British frigate Alaeritv on Saturdai' defied a Nationalist warning to keep outside Chinese territorial waters. Alaerity was then waiting to fescort the Tsinan from the mouth of the Yangtze. Commander Nivesi had assured that the Tsinan Would be safe but asked the British Warship to "keep oif. " Alaerity is reported to have replied: "I consider this area outside your territorial waters and shall consider myself free to move as T like. I ara obliged to carry out my duty of protecting British shipping on the high seas. " Niyuesi then signalled: "This is not Ihe high seas. This is inland waters."
