Big Bottle Coliection. Nearly 20,000 beer bottles were consigned to Auckland after a Whangarei Boy Scouts' Association bottle drive on Saturday. Two railway wagons were packed with empty medicine bottles. Net receipts are expected to excee'd Iast year's record of £200. . . . Reeord Show Gates. The gross gate receipts -for the Royal Show in Palmerston North last week, created another record, the total amounting to £4,464 9s for the three days, compared with £4,050 for the Manawatu A. and P. Association's two-day fixture last year.
Antarctic Exploration. The Polar expedition ship Discovery II, which spent 20 months exploring the Antarctic in 1932-33, is likely to visit New Zealand again towards the end. of next year. The ship is at present being commissioned in England for an oceanographical expedition. Experience With Dirt. "Politics need not be dirty, but if there's any dirt flying about I'll take care of it," said a woman candidate for Parliament in an election address. "We women have1 had a lot of experience with dirt. We've been cleaning it up since the days of Adam." Infectious Diseases. Fourteen cases of infectious disease were notified in the Manawatu - Wellington - Hawke's Bay health district during the past week. They were streptococcal sore throat, including scarlet fever' 1; tuberculosis 5; bacillary dysentery 7; erysipelas 1. There were no deaths resulting from these diseases. Fell Under Sledge. Sledging on his father's farm at Kohukohu (Northland) , Leslie Maynard, aged 22, was thrown under the sledge when two horses bolted. He suffered severe internal and external injuries, in-, cluding a broken neck and other 'damage to his spine. He was taken to the * Rawene hospital where death occurred on Saturday night. — n. i ' alf1 A Castle For £2750. Cargill's Castle, the 16-roomed, three -storey building on the cliffs above St. Clair, Dunedin, has again been sold. Believed to have cost £14,000 to erect in 1877, it was recently passed for sale at £2750. The new owner, Mr. G. P. Holden, a Dunedin builder, intends to renovate the building, which is in a bad state of repair, and make it his home. "The Cliffs," which is the correct name of the castle, was used as a cabaret and dance hall before the war, but was converted into a "hall of God" by a subsequent owner, the late Mr. J. Hutton, in 1945. It was built by Edward Cargill, secretary of the Otago Provincial Council, and son of William Cargill, founder of the Otagp province. Houses For Ex-servicemen. A further 180 tenancies were allocated to ex-servicemen during September under the, system whereby at least half of all newlyvacant or neydy-completed State rental units go to ex-servicemen of the recent war. This brought the total number of such allocations to 11,198. The following shoWs allocations in the various disiricts, the figureg for September being given in parentheses : Auck-land-North Auckland 3202 (50) , Waikato-Bay of Plenty 947 (30), Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay 561 (7), Taranaki 341 (3), Wellington (including Wanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa and Hutt Valley) 3713 (46) , Nelson-Marlborough-West-land 313 (6), Canterbury Province 1275 (20), Otago Province 611 (13), Southland 235 (5) ; total 11,198 (180).
Shortage Of Teachers. "From recent Gazettes it appears that many post-primary school teachers are leaving the profession and I don't know where staff for next year will come from," said Miss V. Townsend, principal of the Avonside Girls' -High School, to a board meeting. Her suggestion that unsuccessful applicants for current positions should be invited to let their names stand for future vacaiicies was adopted. New Australian Stamp. To commemorate LoTd ^Forrest of Bunbury, a 24d stamp is to be issued by tlie Australian Postal Administration and will be on sale in Australia for about three months from the end of November. Lord Forrest, who was born at Bunbury, Western Australia, in 1847, became well known for his exploration trips through Western Australia. He was Premier of Western Australia for 10 years and a member of the first Federal Parliament.
