Received Sunday, 8.50 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 6. The small French steamer Neo Hebridais battled back to Sydney against heavy seas after narrowly escaping disaster. When she reached port she was listing heavily and her steering gear was out of commission. After she left Sydney on Friday for Noumea heavy seas carried away part of her rudder and shifted most of the cargo to the port side. As the ship lav broadside to the gale which swept seas right over her, men managed to repair the steering chain and bring the vessel under partial control.
