1 1 ^ Tomato Crops Ruined At Hastings

HASTINGS, NoV. 6. Hail accompanying a violent eleetrieal storm smaslied glasshonses and stripped fruit and other crops in a'two-mile path in Hastings 'this afternoon. The main fruit area, however, escaped. The hailstorm cut a swath across the eastern side of the town about 4 o'clock. The roofs of a couple of dozen large glasshouses were shattered by jagged hailstones up to a couple of inches at the widest part. Most of the crops were tomatoes which were just coming 011 to the market. These were ruined, the outside growth being stripped by the force of the hail. Although the larger commercial fruitgrowing areas escaped there were some extensive orchards in the path of the storm. The fnll damage to them cannot be assessed until the crops reach a more advanced stage. House roofs leaked as the spouting beeame, choked by hail and the interiors of many were damaged. At nightfall the hail 011 the ground'was still six inches deep.
